Treatments in neurology:

Evolving from academic pontification to urgent disease modification’*

Professor Jeremy Hobart PhD FRCP Consultant Neurologist, consultant medical officer at PartnerRe will present with facilitation/discussion and Q&A guided by Eugene O’Byrne, Group Claims Manager PartnerRe UK & Ireland

*Background :

  • This talk will summarise treatment developments in a range of neurological diseases, reflect on the experiences of MS, and ask if neurology, the Health Services /NHS, and medicine in general will embrace those lessons to fast track the developments that are surely coming.

  • Historically, neurology was a subject characterised by academic pontification about who could best “locate the lesion anatomically”, but with no treatments to help make a difference to the many life-changing degenerative diseases. The next decade could witness a significant change with neurology becoming a proactive speciality of urgent aggressive treatments altering the natural history of high-profile life destroying diseases including Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, the dementias and motor neurone diseases. In the background, treatments for multiple sclerosis quietly lead the way. The history of MS treatments, and MS care, over the last 30 years enable us to predict what is likely to happen, the implications, and trade-offs, but also what could happen if the history is observed and embraced, and historical barriers are removed.

This will be of great interest to underwriters, claims assessors and those involved in pricing and product development.
